We woke up with mixed feelings of joy and sadness; sadness because we were leaving Nanjing and joy because we we’re heading for home. Mdm Yazilah checked our rooms to ensure that we did not leave anything behind and that we did not leave a big mess. After breakfast we bade farewell to Principal Lin and thanked her for the kind hospitality.
Our last stop for an educational and cultural experience was the Nanjing Museum. It housed special artefacts of China. Some of them dated back to 1700 BC. We visited a few galleries , like the Ming and Ching Porcelain Exhibition, The Cloud Brocade Hall, the Chinese Lacquer Ware and Ancient Treasure Exhibition.

We learnt that the ancient Chinese used shell to make plates. The porcelain vases and pots were decorated with drawings of dragons, people, flowers and fruits.
Bird feathers were part of the materials used to make the Emperor’s clothes and only his clothes could have the dragon design. The colours used for the emperor’s clothes were gold, red and blue.

We reached Shanghai International Airport at 4 pm . We still had time for last minute shopping and ICE-CREAM.

Our reflections:
Zann: I feel very satisfied with the trip as I had fun learning about China and I did not realize that China has a rich history.
Farid: I called China home for the last nine days. I loved the beautiful flowers and wonderful fruits they have here in China.
Hannah: I learnt many interesting historical facts about China and I had a good time in Nanjing You Fu West Street Primary School.
Ammar: I have taken steps to conquer my fear of vegetables. I think the students in China take their studies very seriously. They are also creative with their ideas.
Jielin: I enjoyed my lessons at NYFWS Primary School. The students are very attentive in class.

It was the third day of our lesson in Nanjing West Street Primary School. After our breakfast, we went for our lessons. First, we attended a lesson on paper cutting. We were each given a pair of scissors and two pieces of paper. We were taught how to cut out the lantern drawn on the first piece of paper. Next, we were given the opportunity to design our own paper frieze. It was an interesting lesson. We learnt that a lot of patience is required in paper cutting.

The second lesson of the day was about Traditional Chinese Festivals. We were eager to learn about the traditional festivals celebrated by the Chinese. The six traditional festivals are Chinese New Year, Chong Yang Festival, Yuan Xiao Festival, Mid-autumn Festival, Qing Ming Festival and Dragon Boat Festival. To end the lesson, the teacher treated us to some dumplings.

During the third lesson of the day, Mr Lee taught us how to be a journalist. After briefing us on how to write a report, he told us to write a short report on the Children’s Day Celebration. After he taught us the 5Ws and 1H, he instructed us to jot down the questions we would like to ask the prefects in our school.
After having lunch at the nearby MacDonald’s fast food outlet, we went to the Mausoleum of Sun Yat-Sen. We climbed 392 steps to reach “博爱献花台“. We huffed and puffed as we trudged up the stairs. When we finally reached the top, we were rewarded with a post-card perfect scenery! The masouleum was situated high up on the foot of the second peak of Mount Zijin as Dr. Sun was highly regarded by the people in mainland China and Taiwan. Dr. Sun died at the age of 59 and was buried only four years later in the mausoleum.

After catching our breath, we walked down the stairs and went to a restaurant in Water Street for our dinner. Shortly after, we returned to the hostel. Though we were exhausted, we had to pack our luggage as we will be leaving Nanjing tomorrow.

Today, we woke up at 6.30 am. After having our breakfast, we walked to Nanjing Municipal People’s Hall and joined the pupils of Nanjing Youfu West Street Primary School in their Children’s Day Celebration. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Cradle of love”.
We could not believe our eyes when we arrived at the Nanjing Municipal People’s Hall. It was majestic! We were very touched as we were given a warm welcome by the pupils and teachers of the school.

After the principals’ opening speeches, the pupils sang their school song. There was a total of 14 programmes. The third performance was put up by their school brass band. Their impressive performance won the thunderous applause from the audience. As our item was fifth on the list, we had to go backstage and get ready for our performance. Backstage, we felt nervous. Would any one of us play the wrong notes? Would we lose the tempo?

Before long, we were up on the stage. The spotlight shone on us as we performed “Chan Mali Chan” and “Edelweiss”. When our performance ended, the audience applauded loudly. We were relieved and glad they enjoyed our performance.

After our performance, we returned to our seats and enjoyed the performances put up by the pupils. The performers were fantastic! They also looked confident and felt proud of their performance, especially the school choir, which won a Gold Award in the International Youth Music Festival Vienna. They must have put in a lot of time and effort in preparing for their performances. From this, we learnt that commitment is also another important key to success.

After the celebration, we went for our lunch before setting off to the farm. We were amazed by the varieties of vegetables and flowers and how technology plays a role in vegetative propagation. We were fascinated by the different shapes and sizes of the fruits. We saw pumpkins that looked like microphones, gourds and UFOS! We were speechless when the tour guide showed us a gigantic pumpkin, which weighed 50 kg! In addition, we were surprised to see yellow watermelons and mini-watermelons with a diameter of approximately 15 cm. The tour guide also showed us some hydroponics plants and vegetables which we can grow in our garden or balcony. Hmm…Wouldn’t it be interesting to eat the vegetables we grow? Next, some of us were intrigued by the plants we saw. One of them is the plant “碰碰香”. This plant will give off a smell that repels the mosquito when you shake. How we wished we could buy some back to Singapore to keep the mosquitoes away from us.

Reluctantly, we left the farm and proceeded to the Ming Dynasty City Wall. The wall, built about 600 years ago, is 33 km long. It was designed by Emperor Zhu Yuan Zhang to consolidate his sovereignty and keep out invaders when he founded the Ming Dynasty. It took 21 years to complete the whole project. We had an enjoyable time taking fun shots before we had our dinner at a restaurant.

After dinner, we went to a hypermarket “Wal-mart” to shop for some local specialties for our family and friends.
